Who We Are

CCE Students intention tree

Our Vision

The Centre for Creative Education’s vision is to provide relevant, contemporary teacher education born out of a dynamic understanding of pedagogy and social responsibility. It strives to be a creative, active centre of learning and endeavor's to develop motivated graduates with innovative approaches to education, critical thinking, and insight.

Furthermore, CCE aims to make significant contributions towards transforming education through supporting the building of a just and empowered nation for all its citizens. We will continue to educate dedicated teachers until every child in South Africa is connected through creative education

What We Do

Our Mission

An independent provider of Tertiary Education, CCE, equips future teachers with relevant, reflexive, ethical practice in education and self-development through furthering imaginative, innovative, arts and activity-based learning and teaching approaches. We strive to empower future teachers to meet their vocation with love, expertise, integrity, and professionalism.

The Centre for Creative Education, Iziko labantu be Afrika is a non profit organisation focusing on early childhood care and education (ECCE), teacher education (B.Ed.) and Arts (BA). The CCE exists to connect every child to themselves and the environment through conscious creative education based on the principles of Steiner-Waldorf education.

Through the three focus areas the CCE aims to reconnect every child to their passions, their culture, their imagination, their spiritual potential. It does this within the context of building relationships to nature, society, the past, the present and the future.

Our Three Pillars

Our purpose and mission are guided by and aligned with these three pillars, which serve as the foundation for our decisions, actions, and long-term vision.

Teacher Education

Our creative teaching modes combine traditional academic rigour with creative approaches that consciously engage students with the current educational requirements and possibilities on multiple levels. Our faculty are not just experts in their fields, but skilled educators committed to student success. Using an integrative curriculum that is grounded in the Steiner-Waldorf holistic approach and aligned with the CAPS curriculum, the CCE is inspired by diverse educational approaches, including:

  • An imaginative approach

  • An arts-based approach

  • An active learning approach

Early Years Education

CCE understands the need for educators to actively engage with the healthy development of children from birth to nine years. It fulfils this need through supporting practice and research in learning and teaching spaces. CCE’s education actively engages with the context of home environment, mother tongue and beginning knowledge held by children. The objective of this focus area is: To adapt, practice, research and improve early years education in order to connect every child in South Africa to themselves and their environment through conscious creative education, which includes the following:

  • Play-based learning

  • Arts integration

  • Social-emotional development

Community Advocacy

CCE believes that education extends beyond the walls of the classroom. Learning also happens when students are given the chance to engage with the world around them in meaningful ways. Such collaborations provide our students with hands-on, real-world learning experiences. These not only enrich their academic journeys and deepen their understanding of social responsibility, but also impact the environment. Apart from student education, community advocacy further supports:

  • Service learning initiatives

  • Work Integrated Learning

  • Community art projects

  • Public workshops and events

Our School

Founded by the Centre for Creative Education, Zenzeleni brings the transformative power of holistic education to children in Khayelitsha.

Zenzeleni Waldorf School

At Zenzeleni, children are taught in their home language, isiXhosa, from kindergarten through grade 3. In grade 4, they transition to learning in English, and by grade 5, English becomes the primary language of instruction. Nevertheless, the curriculum includes multiple weekly lessons dedicated to teaching both isiXhosa and Afrikaans, ensuring students maintain proficiency in these languages.

Zenzeleni alumni are always welcomed and included in the school community. During the farewell ceremonies for the class 7 children, alumni often join to offer support and share their experiences. This interaction helps the graduating children prepare for the transition to high school and navigate the opportunities and challenges ahead. Alumni of Zenzeleni have pursued various fields of study, including theatre, agriculture, and education.
